Penn actives Stephen Fernandez, Jordan Vega, and Brandon Rista were all honored for their track achievements this past weekend at the Pomona-Pitzer track invitational.

The men got off to a strong start as Stephen Fernandez ignited the Poets as he took first place in his heat in the shot put throwing a personal best 40’5″.

But not to be overlooked was the run of Brandon Rista who in the next heat ran one of his better races of the season with a time of 4:29.86.

But the distance was where it was at for the Poets as Kevin Mancilla led a group of runners in the 1500 with a time of 4:16.44 quickly followed by fellow team members Jordan Vega, Marco Leone, and Jacob Arango.

A Group of Penns by their booth during the Spring Activities Fair

The scene in the upper quad on Sunday, April 10, may have seemed very disorganized.  However, the students and staff knew exactly what was going on at the annual Admitted Students Activities Fair.  This was a day for prospective students to get to know all about the clubs and societies on the Whittier College campus.  The Penns made sure to wear their new shirts and set up a booth of their own too!  The booth generated a lot of interest as parents and students stopped by to find out all about the society.

President Herzberger has issued a challenge to all societies to improve the alumni participation rate for giving at Whittier College. The challenge is to increase the percentage of society members that donate, not the dollar amount raised, so even a small donation will have a large impact on the Penn’s participation rate.

The winning society will receive an invitation to hold its 2011 homecoming brunch at Wardman House, the President’s residence, and a cash prize of $1,000 for the Student Activities Fund.

The Penns are currently in fourth place, but are only 2% behind the Lancer Society (in first place). The deadline to donate is June 30, 2011, so make your donation today!

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Monday April 4, 2011, Pennette Pledging officially began.  This years class includes over 30 girls ranging from Freshman to Senior.  The girls enjoyed their first night, which included learning the names of the current actives, the proper way to greet a Penn around campus, the Sunshine song and making their pledge books.  Over the next week the girls will learn more about the William Penn Society, its history, and the current active members (all in fun and creative ways!)

A group of Penns volunteers at the Miss Whittier Pageant

On April 3, 2011, a group of Actives volunteered at the annual Miss Whittier and Miss Teen Whittier Pageant.  The Penns escorted the participants down the aisle and then helped them onto the stage.  They were also there to provide any additional help so the event could run smoothly.  Many Whittier Alum were present and recognized the Penns instantly.  The event coordinators were so pleased with the Penns help that they invited the men back to help next year.
